The University of Innsbruck has been awarded the contract to host the World University Championship Sport Climbing 2022 (WUC Sport Climbing 2022). The application was made in summer 2019 according to the regulations of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) by the National University Sport Organization Unisport Austria, together with the University of Innsbruck, represented by the University Sport Institute (USI), and the Climbing Federation Austria. "In the heart of the Alps, sport is a central theme in Innsbruck. I am very happy that the University of Innsbruck will again be the venue for an international university competition. The athletes competing for the University of Innsbruck are measuring themselves against the best in the world here, as are our researchers. Top-class sports and top-class research connect people with their abilities, ideas and goals in different disciplines on an international level. I already wish those responsible all the best for the preparations of this event," said Tilmann Märk, Rector of the University of Innsbruck.
Sport climbing, which is in high demand among students, has been part of FISU's competition program since 2013. The first World Championships were held in Shanghai in 2016, with Bratislava winning for 2018 and Turin for 2020. Helmut Weichselbaumer, Head of the University Sports Institute Innsbruck, looks forward to the Student World Championships with great expectations: "With the award of the Student World Championships Sport Climbing 2022 in Innsbruck, we have succeeded in setting another milestone for the University of Innsbruck in international competitive sports. With the Climbing Federation Austria, we have been able to win a partner for the operational implementation, which can guarantee a quality standard at the highest level due to its annual experience in the handling of major international events. Our common goal is to offer the world's best students,
athletes in sport climbing as well as all participants and spectators on site an unforgettable experience." Just like at the IFSC Climbing World Championships Innsbruck Tirol 2018, which was held very successfully at the Climbing Center Innsbruck, the athletes will compete in the disciplines Boulder, Lead and Speed. The Institute of Sports Science of the University of Innsbruck will accompany the WUC Sport Climbing 2022 on a scientific level by holding a Young Researcher Seminar, as it did in the run-up to the Winter Universiade Innsbruck/Seefeld 2005. Hemma Angerer, President of Unisport Austria: "It is great that we have received FISU's approval for the WUC Sport Climbing Innsbruck 2022. This allows Austria to contribute to worldwide university sports and presents Innsbruck internationally as a university and sports city. I am happy that the University of Innsbruck and the Climbing Federation Austria are working together with Unisport Austria in such an energetic and motivated way." Michael Schöpf, Sports Manager at the Climbing Federation Austria, added: "We are particularly pleased that, after the successful Climbing World Championships 2018, we have now been able to bring the world's most important climbing event in university sports to Innsbruck/Austria together with Unisport Austria and the University of Innsbruck. Climbing is a sport that is very popular across all generations and social classes. Especially among students, climbing is highly popular. Many of our active or former national team athletes are students of the University of Innsbruck. That's why we are particularly pleased to implement this project operationally for and with the University of Innsbruck and Unisport Austria."
